AI: Is It Flawed?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming industries, fueling innovation, and changing work and life. From autonomous automobiles to voice-based customer service, the possibilities of AI are endless. And with it so readily available to release, it’s just as important to remember that AI is far from perfect. It’s essential to understand its limitations—not to suppress innovation, but to lead it onto a responsible and ethical course.

By far the most serious flaw of AI is that it is biased. Because AI systems are trained on data—usually historical and human-created—they can reflect and even amplify existing social biases. Software for facial recognition, for example, has been found to be significantly less accurate in processing darker faces, with real-world consequences such as wrongful identifications. Likewise, when AI is applied to the composition of words (such as essays or content generation), it may inadvertently perpetuate bias in language or cultural assumptions in the training data.

Moreover, software like ChatGPT is typically marketed on the promise of generating tidy, engaging copy. While useful, this creates the potential for habituated over-reliance as the writer relies too much on over-complex or jargon-laden terms. This has the potential to erode unique thought and true expression when writers rely on AI for tasks best handled personally or independently.

Habits of over-reliance are a prime concern too. As technology gets powerful, humans may begin to depend on it without even realizing the implications. This leads to de-skilling, where humans lose their ability to perform tasks independently—operating a car, drafting a paper, or making decisions in high-pressure environments like medicine or aviation. In those environments, blind trust in AI can prove devastating. AI lacks true judgment and cannot be relied upon to foresee every subtlety or ethical dilemma that a human would consider.

AI also creates ethics and transparency questions. The majority of AI systems are “black boxes,” so we actually don’t necessarily know exactly how they arrive at certain conclusions. That makes it difficult to hold them accountable when they make mistakes. And since AI uses enormous sets of data—often scraped up off the web—data privacy, consent, and surveillance issues become increasingly troublesome.

Simply put, AI is incredibly powerful but not all-knowing. Its weaknesses—bias, transparency, our reliance on it, ethics, and volatility—must be carefully balanced. As more and more of AI becomes a part of our lives, the conversation can’t end at what AI can do. We have to be asking: what should it do, and how do we ensure it does it in a transparent, fair, and value-aligned manner?
