A Day in Life Of An Office Worker

Written by:

A typical day for an office worker starts with the morning commuting, settling into the habitual rhythms of regularity and small surprises. Once in their workspace, they move through flickers of online orders, interruptions of calls, and deadlines in trying to navigate their time and attention while interacting with colleagues throughout the day. The day is snapshots of the predictable punctuated by breaks, interruptions by colleagues, and occasional surprises. Eventually, it is that time of day when the worker has decision and conversation; that time of day where it is all otherwise an average day in a contemporary workspace yet still special.

They begin their day with a caffeinated drink to ensure they stay energized throughout the day. Although most individuals like a classic cup of coffee, they drink an energy drink because of its immediate advantages for boosting focus. This sets the their day off on an active note by maintaining focus when they are performing the work that requires continual responsibility: answering phone calls, processing orders, and reviewing emails and Teams messages from their colleagues and managers.

They come back to their desk with their energy drink to start their day consists of answering a multitude of incoming calls and answering Teams messages that require immediate, careful attention. They are simultaneously multitasking, which makes it beneficial to have two or even three monitors to navigate multiple systems, review text while still communicating with a colleague. Across the eight-hour shift, they seamlessly switch back and forth among monitors, tackling tasks through a fast-paced workday while remaining engaged, focused, and clear.

In order to create an environment that feels comfortable and personal, they not only added little mementos, but practical items such as hand sanitizer to their work area. These small tokens transform an otherwise unremarkable desk into a designated space that adds a bit of joy into their day. One of those items is a plush they keep close to them. They regard this as one of the items that add comfort and warmth, serving as a small mechanism for decompression during busy and overwhelming days. These small gadgets, comforts, and attempts to keep a good attitude, finding a bit of grounding for the day.

To finish the day off with the upcoming holiday like Thanksgiving, the organization treated everyone to lunch and dessert. The lunchroom was filled with chatter and laughter, as everyone took a pause from working to stand in line for eats, and happy to share the moment together. The lunch was definitely holiday-themed, with a wave of nostalgia and warmth immediately upon arriving, and an overall nice lunch. The dessert was good, to say the least, something that truly helped to take the edge off of the working day funk. It was abundant, and generous, but more so a reflection and to acknowledge the good company of others which made for fun times, into the afternoon.

By the end of the day, the office worker transitions from the fast moving pace of work and meetings to a slow moving pace of reflection and closing out the day. Clearing off the desk and shutting down the computer allows the consistent action to ebb into a feeling of closure followed by satisfaction in the routine. A few remnants of work recalls the thoughts and responses to emails and the small victories served throughout the day. The office worker bids farewell and prepares for recharging to pave their way to office space and return the next day. While each day may feel the same in the office, the consistency of rhythm to shape our productivity and personal growth marks the flow of life in the office space.
